Service messages
Transactional email includes address verification, security alerts, account recovery, and messages about moderation where we send them. These are not marketing, and they are not switched off by declining promotional email.
Activity alerts
In-app alerts can cover votes, replies, follows, and listing activity. You can turn categories off in Settings. Optional sound plays only after the browser allows it. Desktop notifications use the browser permission you grant; the product does not currently create a background push subscription. If the browser has not granted permission, the alert is not shown outside the site.
Promotional email
Promotional email is optional, unchecked by default, and stored separately from acceptance of the Terms. You can change it in Settings. A promotional message has to include a way to stop it. No promotional mailing program is running merely because this page exists.
